iPhone 5C: News, price and release date rumours
iPhone 5C – what is it?
So far the iPhone has been pitched solely at the premium end of the market. With prices for the handset starting at £529 the price is a barrier for many people who can’t afford to lay out a small fortune on a phone.
Budget phones have also been getting better. Handsets like the Lumia 620 and the HTC Windows Phone 8S have brought better screens, longer battery life and more for a bargain price.
Apple has taken notice and the iPhone 5C is said to be their attempt to move into budget handset territory.
Although not officially announced, the iPhone 5C is rumoured to include most of the iPhone’s usual features – such as wi-fi, 3G and 4G compatibility, camera and iOS interface – but will come packaged in a plastic case to save costs. Apple did something similar with the iPod when it released the cheaper iPod Nano.

iPhone 5C – when will it be released?
The rumour mill suggests that the new phone will be announced at Apple’s official press conference on 10 September 2013 in San Francisco. Speculation suggests the phone will then launch a few days later on 20 September.
As far as price, the £200-£300 bracket would seem necessary should Apple wish to realistically compete with rival budget handsets. Above £300 and it’s hard to see the phone attracting budget buyers.
Top five likely features of the iPhone 5C
Design – If the many leaked images are accurate then we can expect the iPhone 5C to be moulded from plastic. The use of plastic will save on manufacturing costs but also allow the handset to be offered in a variety of colours, rather than the straitlaced black and white available on the current iPhone. Otherwise the iPhone 5C is expected to largely resemble the iPhone 5 in terms of dimensions and weight.
Speed – The general expectation is that the iPhone 5C will be comparable to the iPhone 5 as far as performance goes. That would seem to make sense as Apple won’t want any new device, even at a budget cost, to be perceived as slow.
iOS 7 – The iPhone 5C is also almost certain to come with the brand new iPhone interface iOS 7 pre-installed. Apple having already confirmed that the updated operating system will release this autumn. Though doubts linger over whether voice activated interface, Siri, will be supported by the handset.
Screen – It’s widely predicted that the iPhone 5C’s display will be identical to that of the iPhone 5 in terms of size and resolution. That means we can expect a bright and clear screen that’s more than capable of displaying crisp and clear HD video content and images.
Camera – Speculation would point to an 8-megapixel rear camera, with LED flash, and a lower resolution front-mounted camera for those wishing to make video calls. If true, this would put the iPhone 5C in parity with the existing iPhone 5 in terms of camera functionality – although this does lag behind cameras on some competitor handsets.
