Canon, has today, announced three new digital cameras: the Canon PowerShot SX150 IS, the Canon Ixus 1100 HS and the Canon Ixus 230 HS.

Canon PowerShot SX150 IS

The Canon SX150 IS will launch in September for around £200. It offers both full manual control, for more experienced photographers, and also provides basic automatic functions for those less experienced or when a quick point-and-shoot is required.

The camera has a pretty versatile lens, offering 28-336mm focal lengths, meaning that you can take detailed shots of far away objects or zoom out to a broad angle – handy for group shots it tight quarters.

The PowerShot SX150 can capture HD video with a resolution of 720p – so not quite up to the standards of Full HD at 1080p. It has a 3-inch LCD and, like the other two new cameras, features Canon’s latest Image stabilisation (IS) technology, which Canon claims reduces blur to a greater extent than previous IS systems.

Canon Ixus 1100 HS

The Canon 1100 HS has a large, 3.2-inch touchscreen on its rear. Like the SX150, this new Ixus digital camera uses Canon’s latest IS technology. The HS, in its name, however, stands for High Sensitivity.

Canon claims that this HS feature enables the camera to take better shots in low light, thanks partly due to its back-illuminated sensor. We’ve put previous HS cameras from Canon to the test and have been impressed by the HS performance.

The Canon 1100 HS can take 12.1Mp stills and Full HD videos with 1080p resolution. The camera’s also capable of taking super slow motion video clips at 240 frames per second, but the resolution will be considerably reduced.

The Ixus 1100 HS also has a 12x zoom (28-336mm), and it will launch in October for around £370.

Canon Ixus 230 HS

The Canon 230 HS is the latest super slim and ultra compact camera from Canon. It has an 8x optical zoom (28-224mm) and at 22.1mm thick, Canon claims that this is the slimmest camera of its class to have such a powerful zoom.

The 12.1Mp Ixus 230 also features Canon’s latest HS and IS technology, for better shots in low light and reduced blur caused by camera shake.

Like the 1100 HS, the 230 HS is able to shoot Full HD video at 1080p resolution. It has a 3-inch LCD on the rear and will become available in October for around £230.

Digital camera reviews

All three of the new Canon cameras are compatible with the new Canon HF-DC2 external flash. This can be used in addition to the cameras’ built in flashes to strengthen light, or light different areas.

We shall test all of these cameras in our labs in the coming months.

Given your recent highly visible campaign about optical viewfinders, you might spare half a dozen word in these summary reviews to say whether these three Canon cameras do or do not have them!

George, you can see on the photos of the cameras that none have optical viewfinders! Though that doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t have real time digital viewfinders of course – easy to check on dprewiew.com
