If you’re still wondering whether to buy an ebook reader this Christmas, here are some reasons why we think ebook readers are great.

- The battery lasts for months
The new Amazon Kindle Paperwhite claims to last for eight weeks. This means your reading won’t be interrupted with an empty battery symbol – which isn’t something you can gurantee when using a reading app on a tablet or smartphone.
- They can store thousands of books
Even the dinky Kobo Mini can store around 1,000 books on its 1GB of memory. This is great if you’re going on a long journey, when you finish one book you can dive straight into the next without a gap. It’s like having a library with you wherever you go.
- The e-ink screens are gentle on the eyes and easy to read in bright sunlight
When you’re lazing by the pool on your holidays you won’t be able to read from most screens, but not with the ebook readers. The matte screens reflect light like normal paper, meaning you can still see the text even in direct sunlight. This reflective technology also reduces glare, making for a more comfortable reading experience.
- You can access lots of free books
Classics such as Pride and Prejudice, Dracula, Homer’s Iliad and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland are available free on most ebook stores because their copyright has expired and they can be distributed openly. Other free books are also available through sources such as Project Gutenberg which has over 40,000 free titles.
- Ebook readers are now pretty cheap
You can pick up the basic Kindle for under £70 and the Kobo Mini for around £65. As far as tech products go this is great value.
