New iMac and 13-inch MacBook Pro with retina display details

Apple has announced several new products, including a new smaller iPad mini and an updated version of the larger iPad, but it also showed off a new iMac and a new version of the 13-inch MacBook Pro. Read on to find out all the latest info.
What is the new Apple iMac?
The new iMac is Apple’s latest all-in-one computer featuring a new design, improved screen and updated processors. The new iMac is 80% thinner than the previous version at the edge of the screen, measuring just 5mm thick and has 40% less volume than the old iMac.
According to Apple, the new display reduces reflections by 75% thanks to an anti-glare coating, making it easier to read than previous screens. It is available in 21.5-inch versions and a 27-inch model.
As well as updating the design and screen Apple has refreshed the processors making the new iMac faster with third generation quad-core Intel Core i5 processors – with the option to upgrade these to i7. Apple also claims the latest NVIDIA GeForce processors provide 60% faster graphics.
Each iMac now comes with at least 8GB of Ram and a 1TB hard drive, which can be extended to 32GB of Ram and 3TB of storage or 768GB of flash storage for faster access.
When can I buy it?
The new iMac starts at £1,099 for the cheapest 21.5-inch version and £1,449 for the 27-inch model. The smaller version will go on sale in November with the larger arriving in shops in December.
What’s new in the 13-inch MacBook Pro with retina display?
Apple also took the chance to add its retina display to the 13-inch version of its MacBook Pro. The new display measures 13.3-inches across and includes over 4 million pixels, as well as apparently reducing reflections by 75%. For more information read our guide to what is a retina display?
Like the retina display version of the 15-inch MacBook Pro, the new laptop doesn’t have an optical drive but it is 20% thinner than the old 13-inch MacBook Pro and is the lightest version Apple has produced so far.
When can I buy it?
The new MacBook Pro is available immediately but will cost a whopping £1,449 for the lowest spec version.

You asked if any iPad 3 owners are feeling hard done by. Yes, we all know Apple upgrade frequently but I’d at least expect to get 9 month to a year owning the latest product. Apple aren’t even continuing to sell the iPad 3, as they usually do. It’s just been wiped from the website. Presumably the new one will be ably to run on the 4g network but there doesn’t seem much point upgrading for that as by the time there is reasonable coverage outside major cities and some competition with providers apple are sure to have launched iPad 5.

Not sure why Apple are making such a big thing about how thin the new iMac is, I can see why it matters for iPads and iPhones, but not for a desktop computer. And to get that thinness the DVD drive has been sacrificed. I have the previous version iMac and while I hardly ever use the DVD drive it’s nice to know it’s there if needed. I think photographers will be a bit miffed too to find the SD card slot has been moved from the side to round the back, not very ergonomic.
Reducing the screen reflection is to be welcomed, the previous iMac display is beautifully bright but reflections can be annoying at times.
