The cheapest HTC Desire deals

HTC-Desire

The HTC Desire is Taiwanese manufacturer HTC’s flagship handset – a high-end smartphone running Google’s Android operating system. It features 3G/HSDPA connection, wi-fi, 5Mp camera, GPS, 1GHz processor and a 3.7-inch capacitive touchscreen. You can read our full review of the Desire right here.

Cheapest HTC Desire deal by true monthly cost (24 month contract)

Below is our cheapest HTC Desire deal by true monthly cost on a 24 month contract, excluding cashback and line rental deals. True monthly cost is calculated by dividing the lifetime cost of the deal (including any handset cost) by the length of the contract .

True monthly cost: £20.42

Cost per month: £10

Cost of handset: £249.99

Operator: Virgin Mobile

Retailer: Virgin Mobile

Tariff: Virgin £10 Web

  • 50 minutes
  • 250 texts
  • 500MB internet.

Virgin’s tariff doesn’t offer many minutes and your text allowance is pretty average too (though we imagine 250 texts is probably enough for most people).

The HTC Desire is geared very much toward internet browsing, social media and apps and the 500MB data allowance should be enough for most mobile web users, provided you have a wi-fi connection at home. With a wi-fi connection you can do most of your heavy app/podcast/music downloading on your fixed-line, but without one you might eat-up that 500MB fairly quickly.

Cheapest HTC Desire deal on pay-as-you-go

Handset price: £359.90 (inc £10 credit)

Operator: O2

Retailer: Mobiles.co.uk

Standard PAYG rates:

  • Calls to mobiles on same network: 25p per minute for first 3 mins, then 5ppm
  • Calls to mobiles on different networks: 25p per minute.
  • Calls to landlines: 25p per minute for first 3mins, then 5ppm.
  • SMS: 10p per text
  • MMS: 25p per text

As the HTC Desire is a high-end smartphone, buying it on a pay-as-you-go deal isn’t going to be cheap. O2’s standard call rates on PAYG aren’t that competitive either compared to virtual operators such as Tesco Mobile and Talkmobile. But O2 does have some reasonable PAYG incentives, such as 300 UK texts, 500MB of data and unlimited wi-fi when topping up £10 – handy for a data hungry phone such as the Desire.

All the deals above were the cheapest in-stock and available to buy on the date of publication. However, we cannot guarantee their length of availability. Retailers may go out of stock and tariffs and prices may change. Take a look at our tariff update schedule for more info.

When highlighting pay-monthly deals we opted for 24-month contracts rather than 18-month contracts as you’ll usually pay less in terms of handset and monthly costs. However, an 18-month tariff may be more suitable if you want to regularly upgrade your handset or change your tariff.

I wonder how popular a smartphone like the HTC Desire is on pay as you go- these phones are designed for fairly heavy usage which leaves customers open to a strong possibility of having to top up by quite a lot in a month. I wonder whether, as smart phones and their features become more like the expected standard in mobiles, PAYG deals could become obsolete
