HP printer

We find out a lot about a printer’s quality, speed and ease of use during our in-depth six-week printer lab tests, but some quirks only reveal themselves when connected to different routers and devices, or after longer term use.

This is where Which? customer views come in – completing the picture of what it’s like to own and live with a particular printer.

Do you own an HP printer?

At Which? we have test results for more than 25 currently available HP printers, from laser printers to all-in-one and wi-fi printers. If you own an HP printer you can help others considering purchasing an HP by telling them what you think of yours.

Visit our printer reviews and if we’ve tested your printer leave your own review by clicking on the ‘customer views’ tab on the page related to your printer.

Rosi65 is getting the most from the wireless capabilities of the HP Photosmart 6510

I’ve had this printer for 2 weeks now and have successfully and easily set it up to use at home with wireless, using AirPrint from my iPad and iPhone and remotely using Google Cloud. All very easy and with a perfectly good print quality…Yes it’s a little noisy when it springs into action, but then it prints quite quickly, so not a huge problem.

…but noise is one of a number of disappointments for wenvoeguy:

To print a simple page of A4 it clatters and bangs before and after the printing… the display is ok but i have had trouble with setting up Snapfish. Lastly the paper tray is fiddly to get open and you have to look inside to see how much paper is there.

One reviewer has been impressed so far with the great value of the HP Deskjet 3070

The ePrint facility of the 3070A attracted my attention and when I realised it was a copier and a scanner, I decided at £50 it was worth a try. Three months later I am pleased with the decision. Great quality prints for both text and photos. Copier and scan functions work well.
Easy to set up: I was printing wirelessly from PC, Mac and iPad within minutes of taking it out of the box. If I had my time again, I may have spent another £20 or so on a model that accepts HP downloadable apps.

…but another reviewer experienced problems with the scan function

I found everything good, but it wouldn’t scan…to speak to an HP technician I had to ring 0844. I was on the phone for over 2 hours, but he couldn’t help and it cost me several pounds. I took it back to the shop…

Spudnikmir1 is pleased with the prints from the HP Photosmart 5510 printer…

Bought this printer and works great so far!…photo printing works great for budget printer!
Rating: 4 out of 5

…but another reviewer struggled with iPad connectivity

Wanted to connect to my iPad. HP directions said go to www.hp.com.support to download and install the software. I couldn’t get anywhere and spent ages trying trying to get support from HP to no avail. Eventually I got a computer literate friend to solve my problem. It took him an hour to sort it.

HP Officejet Pro 8500; reliable and all scan, copy, print functions are good. Easy to adjust resolution and print quality is good. Replacement ink from Amazon is acceptable price.

I have a HP PhotosmartPlus B210a which was a Which? Best Buy. It caused lots of problems when installed, and I still can’t get the scanner to work. I had to get the local computer shop to try and sort it out. It is very expensive to run, it uses copious quantities of ink. The quality of directly printed photo’s is very poor. All in all I wish I had never bought it. It is only my Scottish blood that is preventing me throwing it away and buying another printer.

I have the same misgivings about how much ink it uses though I generally get the 4 colour pack for about £18 still not a giveaway . The printer seems to work ok though we are not demanding users.

I’ve had a HP Deskjet 710C for 12 years. Use it for general home use and still working well.

I use an all-in-one HP309g but it costs me a fortune in ink. I print colour pictures infrequently and the ink must dry up. I guess I got around 24 prints from a set of inks. I now use it for scanning only (for which it is very good, but also very big). I also have a HP Laserjet 1022 which is still going strong on its first toner cartridge after years of use! I don’t print much.

Their ink is heavily overpriced, for this reason alone I could not recommend them to anyone.

I have a photosmart 6510.
I like…..
The easy connectivity to all the computers in the house via wifi
Printing from my iPad and iPhone
Easy printing double sided
Easy scanning & copying
Access to cheap deals for ink
Easy setup

I would like the scanner lid to lift right off to facilitate scanning of books

On the whole I’m delighted with my purchase

I have a Photosmart C7280 which, by and large, works fine. My main disappointments are as follows:

1. Very noisy.
2. Suddenly goes into “Printer Preparation” mode in the middle of a job and causes long delays.
3. The fax function is quite inflexible: a) you cannot send a multi-page scan by using the glass screen – you have to copy anything bulky and then use the document feeder; b) the maximum number of phone rings is 6 before the fax automatically answers the phone; c) If the fax answers the phone, there is no code that can be input on your phone keypad to “reclaim” the call and the only way to disable the unwanted fax tones from the conversation is to go to the machine and unplug it.
4. It is very reluctant to accept compatible ink cartridges. I have had some success with refilling used cartridges but even if I refill a genuine HP one, it will not read the ink level correctly and keeps complaining that the cartridge has passed its expiry date. It will, also, complain that genuine HP ink is not being used. (I do find that compatible inks give a perfectly acceptable end-result)

I have just bought a Brother A3 all-in-one (MFC J6910DW) which (apart from a touch-screen fault for which it is being replaced) seems fine, very versatile and has a much more flexible fax facility.

I am, naturally, reluctant to recommend HP.

I have a Photosmart 7510 and I like it. Easy to connect to a wifi, easy printing double side,
easy scanning and copying and cheap for ink. I am happy with my purchase. Purchased in end Feb 2012

However, if anyone who knows how to use parts 16 and 17 of the printer please post on this web as I am unable to do so.

I bought a photosmart 5510e All-in-One printer for less than £50 to replace an ageing Canon. Print quality and speed is excellent and I can print easily from my iPad. Very easy to set up. I needed to replace the inks that came with the starter pack very quickly and don’t know yet how long the standard inks will last. My main criticisms (which I was aware of when I bought the machine) is that the printer seems to want to get you to re-align the paper whenever you replace a cartridge or even when you put more paper in the single tray. The warnings seem to come up and cannot be removed without force-quitting the HP alerts.

Double sided printing would have been nice (as in the 6510) but that would have cost another £30. I have tried scanning photos and these are acceptable but not as good as on my previous canon

Bought an HP LaserJet CP1525nw colour printer. Why? Because it was the only one with a dedicated envelope feed tray. It is absolute rubbish, I wish I’d never bought it. It is slow, it takes ages to feed paper, it takes ages to feed and print an envelope. It will slowly print four colour pages a minute, if you don’t want to take five minutes to change the setting to black and white. Black and white is not much faster! You cannot stack envelopes or ask it to print an envelope while it is printing paper. It “calibrates” “cleans” or whatever, every few minutes or so. NEVER EVER BUY ONE…. It does colour when I don’t want colour, but doesn’t do double sided. Total, utter, rubbish. Oh, and the wireless thing doesn’t work either. If it could fit through the window, I would throw it.

I have the HP Officejet Pro 8600 and I am pleased with its performance. It’s an easy to use, reliable all-in-one printer. I would recommend it!

I bought an HP Photosmart B209 about 2 years ago & it has been nothing but trouble, the HP customer service is dire & the ink lasts about 5 minutes ! Rubbish ! Rubbish ! Rubbish !
