Ice Cream Sandwich confirmed, what’s next?

Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb…if you are familiar with the Google Android OS then these names probably ring a bell. Each of these desserts is a code name for different platform updates from Android.

Earlier this month Eric Schmidt, the Executive Chairman of Google confirmed that the next update of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich is set to launch in October or November this year.

Ice Cream Sandwich is rumoured to work on both tablets and smartphones which is a big step forward in mobile operating systems. Previous versions of the Android OS have only worked on one or the other, therefore developers have had to create duplicate applications for each type of mobile device.

Android Jelly Bean

Despite the fact that Ice Cream Sandwich is still a month or two away the rumours are already circulating on what the following platform will be code named, at the moment the leading candidate is Jelly Bean.

Jelly Bean ticks all the boxes in that it follows on the dessert based theme, in alphabetical order, so we are happy to agree with this one. However, we are yet to hear anything on further updates after J.

Here in the Which? office I asked our resident technology experts to guess what the next 3 updates will be called. The predictions are as diverse as you could imagine, ranging from knickerbocker glory to kebab and lemon sponge to lumpy custard but there are some clear favourites.

Coming in top for K with a quarter of the predictions is Key Lime Pie, for L we have Liquorice and for M we are spreading our bets on either Meringue or Mascarpone.
