Nokia has revealed the Lumia 610, the cheapest Windows Phone smartphone to date, and announced the Lumia 900 will be coming to the UK.

The Lumia 610 will be running the Windows Phone Tango version of the software – slated for release in April this year – which will lower Microsoft’s minimum hardware requirements to run the operating system.

With an estimated price of around £160 Sim-free, the 610 will be a lot cheaper than the other budget Windows Phones available and will be well placed to compete with cheaper Android handsets.

A processor with a speed of only 800MHz keeps the price down, and while this is quite a bit slower than the 1GHz efforts Microsoft used to insist on, it should be able to handle most tasks easily.

Its 256MB of Ram is also short of the previous demands put on Windows Phone devices – although Microsoft claims that optimisation of the new software means than 95% of apps currently available for Windows Phone will be able to run on the new lower-specced handset.

One of the big selling points of the Lumia 610 is free access to Nokia’s Drive and Music services – a rare treat for a device at this price point – plus Nokia has introduced two new Windows Phone services, Nokia Transport and Nokia Reading, a public transport and reading hub respectively. Customers will also get  the usual access to Windows Phone features such as xBox Live.

Elsewhere, the 610 has a 3.7-inch touchscreen, 5Mp camera with LED flash and 8GB of internal storage.

Nokia also announced that a non-4G version of the Lumia 900 would be coming to the UK in the second quarter of 2012. This is similar to the Nokia Lumia 800 except it has a larger screen, but unfortunately has the same resolution stretched over the larger display so images won’t appear as sharp.
