The only smartphone worth talking about for many people, the Apple iPhone 4S has attracted praise for its sleek design, powerful performance and some cutting edge innovation. There is certainly plenty to like.
Apple iPhone 4S and Siri
Released amidst a blaze of shiny PR and slick advertising, Siri is the blockbuster feature on the iPhone 4S – designed to make the device stand out from its iPhone 4 predecessor and get customers to dip into their pockets. Essentially a voice activated personal assistant, Siri allows you to talk to your phone.
You can perform tasks – such as scheduling a meeting or playing music – but also ask questions, like what’s the weather like today? or is the4.15pm train going to be late? You don’t need to say the 4.15pm to Tamworth because – in theory – Siri learns and remembers your routines and schedules. It knows where you want to go and when.
Revolutionary or scary, depending on whom you ask. It’s worth flagging that Siri currently has only limited UK functionality.
Apple iPhone 4S performance
So what else does the Apple iPhone 4S have up its sleeve? It’s fitted with a dual core, A5 processor – as seen in the iPad 2 – meaning it’s better able to and quicker at running multiple apps and programs. It also offers improved graphics capability.
There is an 8Mp camera and 1080p full HD quality video camera to play with and – as you would expect from the people behind the iPod – a music player is also included.
Apple iPhone 4S on test
Apple’s slogan might be ‘it just works’ – but does it? Here at Which? we look past the hype and hyperbole in our rigorous lab tests to find out just how well phones really work.
Read our Apple iPhone 4S review to discover how the phone scored in our demanding lab tests – where we check everything from camera and screen quality to how easy is it to connect to the internet or type a text message. We also looked into whether Apple addressed the death grip issue that caused problems with the iPhone 4.
Best deals on the iPhone 4S
We’ve been looking around for the best deal on the Apple iPhone 4S 16GB when buying the phone unlocked and without a contract.
While there are offers floating around eBay of around £450 – with reputable sellers –there is a risk that the phone will actually be a ‘jailbreak’ unlock – which allows you to install 3rd party apps on your phone but doesn’t unlock the phone to other networks. Jailbreak is also a legal grey area and is likley to void your warranty.
Orange have the iPhone 4S on offer for £489 on pay as you go – but this will come locked to their network. The price for an unlocked iPhone 4S over at Play.com is £530, with the Apple store offering a price of £499. You can make a small saving by shopping at Carphone Warehouse, where the iPhone 4S is tagged at £489 plus a £10 top up. By no means a stellar deal but that does at least give you some free minutes.
