Microsoft has started to gradually push out the Mango operating system update to its smartphones, with 98% of handsets scheduled to get the upgrade by the end of October.

Users of Windows Phone 7 handsets should be getting a Mango flavoured delivery of over 500 new features in the coming weeks – although it may be a slow process as only 10% of handsets have had the update pushed out to them so far.

Microsoft is sending out the update gradually so it can identify any problems and ensure the process goes as smoothly as possible.

Microsoft claim that the Mango update will bring over 500 new features including multi-tasking and twitter integration.

Users due for the update will receive a notification and will have to hook their device up to their PC via the Zune software to start the upgrade.
