The long-awaited Xperia Play made an appearance at Sony Ericsson’s Mobile World Congress press conference today, with a few more details released.
The Xperia Play, or PlayStation Phone as it’s been known during the last five years of speculation, was shown-off extensively during Sony Ericsson press conference and billed as the ‘first PlayStation certified device.’
This means it has access to range of games and services provided by the ‘PlayStation Suite’, a network/store that will be available at some point in 2011.
The exact details of the PlayStation Suite are still a bit vague, but we were told that the Xperia Play will launch with 50 downloadable games, and one pre-installed ‘legendary PSone title’ (the identity of which remains a mystery).
Xperia Play key specs
- Android 2.3 Gingerbread
- 5Mp camera
- 4inch touchscreen + slide-out gamepad
- 1Ghz CPU and Adreno GPU graphics processor
- 3G and wi-fi connectivity
- Front-facing camera
- Access to PlayStation Suite
Need for Speed, The Sims 3, Assassin’s Creed, Splinter Cell, Deadspace, Battlefield and FIFA 10 have all been confirmed as Xperia Play launch titles, with developers EA, Glu Mobile, Gameloft and Ubisoft supporting the device.
The Xperia Play is out in the US in March, with no word yet on a UK launch date.
We will be getting an extensive hands-on in the next few days, so check back soon for our first look review and video. In the meantime you can occupy yourselves with another Xperia Play ad below (this time without the horrific surgery).
