Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover for iPad – the perfect iPad keyboard?
What is the Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover for iPad?
Sometimes the name says it all. It’s a wireless iPad keyboard that doubles as a cover. It’s designed to be the perfect answer for anyone who writes a lot on their iPad, or wants to, but doesn’t want to carry around a standard-size wireless keyboard.
It costs £79.99 online and is available in white, black and red. It comes with a three-year limited warranty. There’s a similar keyboard available for the iPad mini, too – we’ll post our first impressions of that soon.
Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover for iPad – 3 key features
1) It has iPad specific shortcut buttons
It’s easy to use a standard Apple Wireless Keyboard with an iPad, but the Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover for iPad adds iPad specific shortcut buttons to make using it with an iPad even easier. For example, in the top left there’s a home button, and there are function buttons for selecting, copying and pasting text. You can also control music playback and volume – all are accessed using the ‘fn’ key in the bottom left.
2) It’s not (quite) as good as a full-size keyboard…
…but it is much better than using the on-screen keyboard. It takes a few days to get used to – the keys aren’t full-size and some keys, such as the apostrophe key, are half-width, making them harder to hit. Nonetheless, unless you’re planning to write your next great novel, it’s absolutely fine for making notes and writing emails.
3) The battery charges using USB
As the keyboard connects using Bluetooth, it has a built-in battery to power it. To charge it, all you have to do is plug it into the USB port on your PC, or a standard USB wall socket charger. It’s a neat solution that ensures you never have to buy batteries or carry a bulky charger. The only drawback is there’s no easy way to find out how much charge is left – a silly oversight – but Logitech claims it lasts six months on a full charge if used two hours per day, so it’s not something you’ll have to do often.
Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover for iPad – first impressions
Andy Vandervell, deputy technology editor
This is a cracking keyboard and case combo, but only for the right person. As a keyboard for the iPad, it works a treat. Your mileage will vary depending on how confident a typist you are, but it only took me a couple of days to get up to a reasonable speed.
The iPad specific shortcut keys are a godsend when making notes, as you can quickly select, copy and paste text using the shortcut keys alone. Build quality is excellent and as keyboard covers go it’s very slim and light, though it still adds 270g to the iPad’s weight.
All of which is fine if you mainly use your iPad at home or at work – it’s particularly at home in the latter, where it’s perfect for dashing between meetings. But the moment you want to read on the train, or use it without the keyboard, it doesn’t work quite so well. You can’t fold the keyboard behind the iPad like a standard Smart Cover – it’s too heavy for the magnets to keep hold of it – so you have to detach the keyboard entirely and put it in your bag.
This is far from a deal breaker, but it’s the kind of trivial annoyance worth bearing in mind. It’s a better keyboard than it is a cover.
If you know this won’t bother you, however, and you do enough typing on your iPad to warrant spending the money, this is a top-notch accessory that will make your life easier.
